Minister of Music Search Committee

The Minister of Music Search Committee is working deligently, praying, and searching for someone to fill the position of music minister here at Calvary. Barbara Chapman is chairperson of this committee.

Deacon Michael Parkhill Participates In Space Experiment

Captain Michael Parkhill an Aerospace Officer and and Assistant-Principal and Science Teacher at Era ISD was one of six educators selected to fly one of “Challenger's Lost Lessons” in tribute of educator Christa McAullife who lost her life when the Challenger exploded upon launch 23 years ago this January 28th. The team flew two updated experiments from the Challenger's Lost Lessons, one on Magnetism and one testing Newton's Laws of Motion. Michael's Era NASA Science & Engineering Team redesigned and reworked the Magnetism experiment. The experiments were flown as part of the NASA Reduced Gravity Program on board a modified Navy C-9 aircraft called The Weightless Wonder (it is also referred to as the “vomit comet”). The aircraft flew out of Houston on January 16th and through controlled dives the result was micro gravity (zero g), simulated lunar gravity, and Martian gravity. The team collected data on their experiments during their flight and filmed the experiments for future students to view over the Internet or on discs.

Each participant was required to pass an NASA Flight Physical, medical tests in the Altitude Chamber/Hyberbaric Chamber, and be able to conduct their experiments in flight.

We had been working on this since September and spent the final ten days working in Houston.

On a personal note, Parkhill says he would like to thank everyone for his or her thoughts and prayers. I could truly feel the prayers while I was working on the experiment and during the flight. It really enabled the Lord just to work through me to complete my work. While many were becoming ill during the flight I could feel the Holy Spirit working through me to complete the tasks at hand.

We are very thankful and proud to have Michael and his family as part of our church family at CBC.

Grand Avenue Baptist Church

What a wonderful way to start a worship service, with a baptism. Our pastor, Bro. Bill Black had the pleasure of baptizing his grandson, C. J. Oldaker, as the congregation and many relatives shared in the joy. Welcome to our newest member.

Mary Friddell voiced the opening prayer. We wished Aaron Harendt a happy birthday on Saturday.

In the Children's Church Barbara Roberson pointed out we have a newly paved parking lot, the old building has been torn down, we have freshly washed windows and waxed floors but it is not the improvements that make a church; it is the people. She asked the children to think of words with ball in them, such as football and basketball. These are games played by a team working together. Our church, Sunday School and other churches work together as a team to tell others about Jesus.

Hugh Porter and Richard Hughes took up the offering as our Music Minister Benny Strong sang “The Old Rugged Cross” a capella.

Bro. Bill Black's sermon was from Luke 16:19-31 about the rich man and Lazarus. The name of Lazarus means God supplies help but the name of the rich man isn't mentioned. In this passage hell is described graphically but some people still think hell is a mythical place like the fountain of youth of the golden cities. But as the rich man discovered, hell is not a mythical place and the devil is not a cartoon creature. Hell was not made for us; it was made for the devil and his angels. Nothing on earth lasts forever but hell does.

Orlando Perez gave the benediction.

GABC is located at 600 N. Grand Ave. with off-street parking and the entrance east of the church on Clements St. Morning worship begins at 10:40 a.m. and you will find a warm welcome there.

Mt Pleasant Baptist Church

On Sunday January 25th, the sermon was entitled “Tribulation 101” taken from John 16:25-33 and II Corinthians 12:7-10. Many times we ask ourselves these questions, why do God's people suffer, and where does tribulation come from? The answer is found in Genesis 3 with the original sin of Adam and Eve. The next question is: What does suffering do for us? The answer is two-fold. It can be either punishment for sin or it can be to expose our faith, as found in II Corinthian 12:7-13. God allows Satan to work in our lives to draw us to the image of Christ. Tribulation does three things for us. First it has a way of revealing to us our level of spiritual maturity. Second, tribulation humbles us. Lastly tribulation drives us to God and in some cases it can drive us from God, depending upon how one accepts tribulation. The hope within tribulation is found in John 16:33 where we are told that in Christ we may have peace. It depends upon our response.

In our worship service this past Sunday we had ten visitors that we welcomed. Our visitors are always encouraged to come back to fellowship with us. We were glad to have so many this past Sunday.

Vilott Baptist Church News

“19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matt 28:19-20 (HCSB)

The emphasis for Vilott Baptist Church this year is summed up in this Bible verse. It is sometimes called the Great Commission. Jesus spoke these words to his disciples, and they are just as relevant today as they were in the early days of His Church.

We want to invite you to join us as we learn about what Jesus meant and how we can fulfill His Word.

Our regular worship services begin at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning with a fellowship breakfast followed by Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. The morning worship service starts at 11:00 a.m. and the evening service is at 6:00 p.m.

On Wednesday evenings we have a family meal at 6:00 p.m with free food and fellowship for everyone. TeamKid for our children starts right after the meal, and they are learning all about missions, Bible verses, and loving the Lord. Our Youth meets with Kaji Price at the same time, and the adults are in a special prayer service.

Our pastor Rick Isham is available to counsel and guide with prayer for your encounters in life. He is a loving, intelligent pastor who believes in prayer. We have people throughout the church who are called on to be prayer warriors. You can always be a partner in prayer. God loves you, and so do we. Come join us!

Call Pastor Rick Isham at 940-665-1629.

We are located on FM 678 east and north of Callisburg. The buildings are nestled in a grove of trees on the curve. Look for us, and we are looking for you.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church

The Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time will be observed this coming weekend. The readings from Deuteronomy 18:15-20 and Paul’s letter to the Corinthians 7:32-35 points to a person who is dedicated to the Lord and serves as a spokesperson for God.

In Mark 1:21-28, we hear that “the people were spellbound by Jesus teaching because he taught with authority and not like the scribes.” In the readings, part of the process of discipleship, is the examination of one’s habits and motivations with a view to changing one’s life.

Monday, February 2, the church celebrates the “Presentation of the Lord,” the feast is the Presentation of our Lord in the temple at Jerusalem. The ancient Jewish law required that, following the birth of a firstborn male child, the mother must come to the temple after 40 days for purification and for presentation of the child to the Lord, which Mary and Joseph did.

The traditional liturgy for the day is called Candlemas, because of its ancient rite of blessing of the candles to be used in the church for the next year, a practice dating from the middle of the fifth century. At the Mass on Monday, Father Jim Pemberton, will bless some candles for personal or home use.

Tuesday, February 3, is the feast of St. Blaise. For many, this saint is known for miraculously curing of a small boy who was choking to death on a fishbone lodged in his throat. It is traditionally the day set aside by the church to bless throats. St. Mary’s will observe this feast by having the blessing of the throats at the Wednesday evening Mass on Wednesday, Feb. 4th which is at 5:30 p.m. All are welcomed!

The reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the children who are preparing for First Holy Communion this spring, will take place on Monday evening, February 2, at a 7 p.m. service.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be all day Friday, February 6, from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

For more information, regarding any program or activity call St. Mary’s parish office at 665-5395.

Iglesia St. Mary’s

New Beginnings Fellowship Church

Our scripture reading was from Isaiah 40: 28- 31 by Russell Fomby. We had a special titled “ Let My Words Be Few” sang by Bro. Lew. Our text begins with John 1: 1- 18 reflecting on how the Word became flesh and through Him all things were made. He is the light of the world. We need to understand life is not about us. The purpose of life is greater than our family, wants, needs, ambitions, and our wildest dreams. It is about God and serving Him. To understand what life is about we must put God first. Phil 4: 4- 7 Tells us spiritual life is peace and joy that surpasses all understanding. Avoid things that may dim your vision of what Jesus cam give you. Romans 3: 23 for all have fallen short of the glory of God. John 10: 10 Satan has come to steal and destroy, Jesus came to give life to the full. Deut 8: 1- 3 words from Moses and Matt. 4: 4 Words from Jesus — Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the word of the Lord. Other verses covered were John 1: 26 and John 3: 16- 17.

We celebrated our 2nd anniversary after the service and had a wonderful meal! We are hoping to be in our new facility this year and will have a celebration planned for that day.

Our prayers go out to Beth and Charley Kuykendall, Debbie Parker, the Morgan family and bro. Lew.
