Gainesville businesses excel in automotive care and maintenance services

Gainesville — An auto body repair company that began in Gainesville more than a decade ago has branched into a trio of thriving specialty shops.

Body Works at 1115 N. Grand Ave., which opened in November 2000 and is operated by Steven Knabe of Muenster, currently shares its facility with Auto Clinic, a general automotive repair business that began in 2009 and functions under the guidance of Ryan Green of Gainesville.

The third element in this partnership is Castrol Premium Lube Express at 505 N. Grand Ave., operated by Brian Rains of Lindsay.

All three will be promoted through a special “Customer Appreciation Day” set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the lube shop, offering free food, door prizes, children’s games and auto-related giveaways.

Green said the body repair business has been in town the longest — but is now part of a three-fold partnership that is successful for simple reasons.

“We try to turn in quality work in a timely fashion and take care of the customers in a small-town community,” he said, adding that the company’s local presence includes civic participation. “We donate to numerous charities throughout the community, and we sponsor football teams and basketball teams and soccer teams.”

All technicians at Auto Clinic, Green added, are Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)-certified to handle repair on all vehicle makes and models. Brake work, tune-ups and air conditioner repair are commonly handled through the Grand Avenue shop.

The repair process also includes a free shuttle service, loaner vehicles for qualified customers and a special “after hours” night drop form. The facility is an “I-CAR Gold Class” certified repair center, and limited lifetime warranties are available — which are commonly backed by major insurance companies on labor services.

A key strength of Body Works is the quality of paint products. Knabe explained that unlike some auto painting businesses, his facility is able to employ the latest line of DuPont colors in matching exactly what the vehicle needs to look its best when being touched up after a body repair.

“We use the exact color system that the manufacturers are using, and I think that’s a big selling point,” he said.

If a precise DuPont color match isn’t possible, then Body Works specialists are able to employ the methods of “tinting” or “blending.” Tinting is achieved by using white to vary the color toners in the paint’s original formula.

When tinting doesn’t work, Body Works specialists apply the “blending” process, where they slightly alter the color of areas near where the problem is, so that the overall tone looks almost identical.

Green said the Castrol lube shop serves that particular need of a vehicle in a comprehensive capacity. Attendants provide full-service oil changes and state inspections and the facility has a car wash, complete with attendant. No appointments are necessary, and the available Castrol product line includes items for regular and high-mileage vehicles and diesel trucks, and everything is kept reasonably priced.

“It’s less expensive but just as competitive,” Green said.
