NCTC to host 'Elder Law Boot Camp'

GAINESVILLE — A short course on the legal basics many need to know as they age will be offered in two sessions at North Central Texas College’s Gainesville campus.

The “Elder Law Boot Camp” classes, scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, are designed to educate older persons, their families and professionals about common legal mistakes, myths and concerns related to aging.  The instructor notes it is never too early to prepare for the future.

The first session covers the basic legal documents for both disability planning and the transfer of property by will, trust or other means. The attorney will look at how the legal needs of the elderly are impacted by health concerns or issues.  This overview of life care planning will explain how to avoid costly legal mistakes and ways to insure high quality care at home or in an alternate setting.

The first session also answers the question, “What is a living trust and why should I care?”  A concise and understandable explanation of living trusts will be presented along with information about how a trust can benefit elderly people and help preserve assets, providing peace of mind for the future.

The final session of the course will clarify some of the myths about Medicaid and Veterans Benefits.  Strategies on the legal ways to qualify for these programs will be provided. And this is when participants may learn details about government programs which are not revealed when calling the VA or the local Medicaid office, as well as some of the typical myths of Medicaid qualification.

North Central Texas College is assessing $15 per person for this course. To register, call (940) 668-4
