GISD collects jeans for homeless youth

Gainesville — The Gainesville High School Student Council and NHS has collected over 1,000 pairs of jeans in support of the 1.7 million homeless teens in America.

Summer 2012, student council members were sent to a camp and learned of the jean drive. The annual jean drive is sponsored by Aeropostale and DoSomething.org.

All of the jeans will go directly to Aeropostale where they will distribute the jeans to shelters across the country.  As an appreciation for participation, each student at GHS will receive a coupon for 25 percent off a pair of Aeropostale jeans.

The school with the highest participation rate will receive a free hoodie for every student, a party for the student body and a $10,000 grant.

“We have collected over 1,000 pairs of jeans,” GHS junior Morgan Moore said.  “I didn’t think we could do this many but it’s very exciting.”

The drive has become a community-wide effort.

“This drive has grown past the Gainesville High School limits,” Anne Marie Killough, NHS sponsor and FCS teacher said. “We have also received donations from Weber Aircraft, Lee Intermediate School and Second Time Around. The kids have done a great job and the entire GISD is proud of their efforts.”

GHS is apparently in the running for the top prize.

“We contacted the Aeropostale store in Lewisville last week and they said that they had not heard of any school collecting over 1,000 pairs of jeans,” said GHS junior Hannah Gerkin.

The jeans were expected to be delivered to Aerospostale Friday.
