Enthusiasts for dressing fashionably and on a slim budget have a chance to show that combination to an audience during “Design on a Dime,” a frugal-friendly style show set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., THursday, May 2 at Stanford House in Gainesville.
The entry fee for the second annual show includes the cost of lunch and is $10 at presale and $15 at the door. “Design on a Dime” generally attracts more than 200 visitors and the proceeds directly benefit Stanford House and its resources and programs tailored to area senior citizens.
Organizer Carolyn Castleberry said the 2012 show raised more than $2,000, an amount that would pay the monthly utility bills at the 10,000-square-foot facility.
“For people who don’t realize, we operate only on donations and fundraisers,” she said. “And so that money keeps the doors open and brings activities to other seniors in the community.”
The top three winners will receive gift baskets of retail values up to $200. And the show itself has a theme possibly unseen in any other local fashion-oriented event. Contestants can spend no more than $25 on their outfits — and so participation tends to include getting as creative as possible at a thrift store.
“It’s fun to do and it’s fun to see how you can bring an outfit together when you use your imagination,” Castleberry said.
She also said the 2012 participants were surprising with their results.
“There were outfits that you could have worn any place,” Castleberry said. “Some of them looked like million-dollar outfits. And the audience really got into it. You would not believe the notes people had taken. You could tell they were really paying attention, which I thought was awesome.”
The fashion show is sponsored by Angels Care Home Health; Select Rehabilitation Hospital of Denton; Renaissance Care Center; Hometown Pharmacy; and Ray of Sunshine Sitting Service of Grayson, Cooke & Montague Counties. Tickets are available by contacting any of those agencies.
The show is open to men and women over the age of 18.
Entry deadline is April 18, and the form and entry fee must be submitted by 4 p.m. on that day.
The total cost of the outfit must not exceed $25. This includes all clothing and accessories with the exception of shoes and undergarments.
Clothing and accessories may be purchased new or used, but receipts for all items worn must be brought to the pre-show contestants meeting set for 1 p.m. April 29.
All contestants must attend the pre-show meeting.
Contestants must provide their own description of their outfit, and the written description is due during the pre-show meeting.
Contestants will be judged by the attendees of the luncheon. Contestants with the top three votes will receive gift baskets. In the event of a tie, the contestant who spent the least amount of money on his or her winning outfit will be deemed the winner.
