Relay for Life organizers looking to add volunteers

Cooke County — The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Cooke County is just around the corner, and volunteers are still needed.

Relay For Life, which is held annually in Cooke County, is an overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones lost and raise money for the fight against cancer.

Event organizers want every cancer survivor in Cooke County — along with every caregiver — recognized for their accomplishments.  Survivors are urged to register today by contacting Brita Adkins at (940) 736-3442, at brittany_adkins@teamhealth.com or by visiting www.RelayForLife.org/CookeCoTX.

Survivors, current cancer patients, caregivers, families, business members, civic organization members and members of the public are invited to take part in the annual team event.

Relay For Life of Cooke County is set for 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday, May 3, through Saturday, May 4, at Gainesville High School’s football stadium.

A community service special that includes inspiring stories of courage from survivors and more information about Relay For Life is set for 7:45 a.m. Friday, March 8, on Hometown Radio 1580 KGAF.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life unites friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools and churches — people from all walks of life.

Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of supporting a cure for cancer.

The American Cancer Society turns 100 this year, and Cooke County’s annual Relay For Life turns 17.

“Relay For Life brings the progress against cancer to the forefront,” said event chair Stacy Dickerson. “Many participants are our family, friends, and neighbors who have been cured of cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made not just in cancer cure rates, but also in the quality of life following cancer treatment.”

Spokesman Kyle Ingram said the funds raised enable organizers to continue an investment in the fight against cancer through research, education, advocacy and services to patients.

“Due to the generosity of our sponsors, the money raised by participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs,” he said.

Last year Cooke County residents came together and raised more than $125,000 for the American Cancer Society, which is the most ever locally raised. Organizers invite the public to help set a new record during 2013.

Register or join a team today by contacting Amanda Riley at (940) 634-4848, ariley_06@yahoo.com or by visiting the website at www.RelayForLife.org/CookeCoTX.
