Deputies halt assault rifle transaction

Valley View — VALLEY VIEW — Tuesday’s interception of an automatic assault weapons sale in Valley View resulted in four arrests.

Cooke County Sheriff Terry Gilbert reported that sheriff’s deputies and members of the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) stopped a sale of 20 AK-47 assault rifles that were reportedly destined for Mexico.

Gilbert said that after maintaining surveillance in the 13000 block of South Interstate 35 East in Valley View, officers witnessed four males meet Tuesday in two vehicles and attempt to publicly exchange guns and money. The officers then arrested the men — one Oklahoma City resident, two Denton County residents and one South Texas resident — and seized their vehicles plus the 20 assault rifles and $16,000 in cash.

The defendants were later brought to and placed into the Cooke County Jail with charges pending in the Federal Court of the Eastern District of Texas.

Gilbert said his office is currently working closely with the ATF to protect the citizens of Cooke County and to ensure that any offender caught is prosecuted to the maximum extent of federal law.

“We are continuing the investigation and expect more arrests in the near future,” he said Monday.
