A collision between a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train and a car delayed traffic at several Gainesville railroad crossings Saturday morning. The accident happened at the California Street crossing near the Santa Fe depot.
No injuries were reported, but the train remained on the track for more than an hour following the wreck.
The occupant of the passenger vehicle exited the car shortly before the collision, Gainesville Police Sgt. David Sharp said.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:50 a.m., Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Joe Faust said.
The train’s crew members were not injured, he said.
The incident caused some railway signal light damage and was expected to delay the arrival of Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer passenger train Saturday.
Faust said Gainesville Police officials will conduct an investigation.
He said he can’t speculate on how the passenger vehicle ended up in the path of the freight train but noted the incident was likely recorded on cameras mounted to the train.
“We’ll have to take a look (at the video recording) to determine what happened,” he said.
