4-Hrs compete in Muenster show

Kids from eight to 17 years old showed their animals during the 2009 4-H Livestock Show, under the direction of county 4-H Agent Phyllis Griffin. All exhibitors received ribbons, class champion ribbons, showmanship belt buckles, and grand and reserve champion medals, in Muenster Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Martin Trubenbach MISD Ag Center. The show started at 9 a.m. with judging taking place in the main ring and the side ring.

Kindergartner Andie Wells participated in the Clover Kids class, designed for kids who want their first experience in the show ring. They see how and what the judge looks for and they get some experience in what to do in the ring. Each entry receives a participation award.

Wells showed Brownie, a companion goat for her sister’s show goat. When asked what kind of goat Brownie was she said “he is a mountain goat.”

This was the first show for eight year old Caroline Darbo and her seven month old boer goat Noel. Darbo’s mother, Charlan, said Caroline wanted to show an animal and as a mom she wanted her to show something small and safe to start with.

Dakota Tinney, an eighth grader at Callisburg High School has been showing since he was nine years old. He took first place in the Black OPB class.

Some of the classes focused on showmanship and the skills of the individual were judged, not the animal. Other classes focused on the animal and qualities such as confirmation and disposition.

The order of show in the main ring was dairy cattle, dairy goats, beef cattle, sheep, clover kids, swine and goats. The order of show in the side ring was poultry and rabbits.

Texas AgriLife Extension Agent Wayne Becker said “4-H provides an opportunity for youth to develop leadership skills, learn about a whole host of things, learn about responsibility, civic service, all while still being able to have fun.”

“It’s a great opportunity for the whole family to be involved in activities together,” said Becker. “In general, it helps develop youth into contributing citizens.

Becker said that kids also get to mingle with kids their own age from around the area.

Becker said that for those kids who stick with it and become skilled, it can open a lot of doors for things like scholarships.

The Martin Trubenbach MISD Ag Center is the new Ag barn that has been built for the Ag program at Muenster High School. Griffin said the land for the center was donated and the school board and citizens got together to have the facility built, and now they have been gracious enough to let us use it be used for the show, Becker said.

Texas Specialty Coach and Carriage Company and Bob Malone and Judy Price supplied the Grand and Reserve medals and were presented to winners by Kendall Pearse. The show, belt buckles, and superintendent caps were supplied by the Trophy House, Ranchland Tack Feed and Western, Graves Farm and Ranch of Era, Chesapeake Specialty Products, Texas Star Embroidery, Terry Gilbert Wrecker Service, Schumacher Farms of Era, Fuhrmann Dairy, Lazy JD Livestock, Dick Morgan, Soil Express/Don Hudspeth, Timberline of Colorado, Saddle Creek Cowboy Church, A and J Angus (Jack and Anita Thayer), Luttrell McNatt of Sanger, Richard Dangelmayr, In memory of Leroy Pearse by Pat and In memory of Larry by Melinda Butler, Rudy and Shirley Paclik, Leslie and Mary Alexander and Kelley Redi Mix of Valley View.
