Mall employee puts out fire

Staff report

An employee of the Van Heusen clothing store in the Gainesville Factory Shops put out a small fire in the store’s sign Monday night, according to an official with the Gainesville Fire Department.

The sign apparently became overheated due to a short-circuit or faulty electrical equipment.

An employee put the fire out before a maintenance worker arrived and cut the breakers to the store.

Firefighters were on scene about 20 minutes and the fire did not spread to other parts of the structure, the official noted.
