Abigail's Arms fund raiser set for Saturday

If you have ever wondered what an “afternoon of high-tea” is like in England, spend this Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at the “Afternoon Tea and Book Signing” at Amelia’s Attic to benefit Abigail’s Arms.

Betty Kay Schlesinger, Abigail’s Arms shelter project manager, said author Theresa Westbook will be speaking at the tea as well as signing copies of her book, “A Strand of Pearls.”

Schlesinger said people should come to the event because Westbrook has a very interesting story to tell. “She is a survivor and she understands what it takes to get through it,” said Schlesinger.

Schlesinger said it might be of particular interest to women of strong spiritual faith.

“She is just a lovely woman,” said Schlesinger.

Westbrook lives in Denton and is participating with the fund-raising and building of the shelter for the abused women and families here in Cooke County.

“A Strand of Pearls,” is her faith-journey through the child assault and sexual abuse she experienced. Schlessinger said Westbrook’s book speaks about being able to spiritually and faithfully resolve her personal conflicts.

Westbrook participated in Abigail’s Arms Capital Campaign Kickoff in April. She carried the “silent testimony” signs on-stage that read “The child sex abuse I suffered was devastating. It does happen” and the flip side, “I survived. Others can too! With your help. Do something now!”

Schlesinger said the food to be served at the tea is being prepared by Donna Hertel, owner of Amelia’s Attic in Sarah’s on the Square. The menu includes black olive and cury toast points, miniature crousaints with chicken salad, spicy pimento cheese on pita bread, chocolate dippped strawberries, minature lemon bars with fresh blueberry garnish, miniature brownies and cream puffs with powdered sugar and fresh rasperrries.

Assorted teas will also be served.

The tickets to participate in the benefit are $25 for two or $15 for one.
