DPS plans to be out in force

Special to the Register

Despite rising gas prices, the Texas Department of Transportation expects a large number of motorists on Texas roads this Labor Day holiday.

An increase in overall traffic translates to an increase in alcohol-related crashes, injuries and fatalities, a TxDOT news release stated.

Texas continues to lead the national in drunk driving traffic fatalities. During 2006, 1,354 motorists in Texas died in alcohol-impaired crashes where the driver had a blood or breath alcohol concentration of .08 or higher — up 34 deaths from the previous year.

TxDOT is warning motorists that thousands of state troopers and local law enforcement will be stepping up enforcement of the state’s DWI laws during the Labor Day weekend. Last year, 3,979 drunk drivers were taken into custody during the crackdown, up more than 700 arrests from the previous year.

TxDOT’s “Drink. Drive. Go to jail” safety campaign reminds motorists that if they drink and drive this Labor Day holiday, they will be arrested.

An arrest and conviction for DWI can cost a bundle: fees include car towing, impoundment, bail, attorney fees, court costs, fees for extended proof of insurance, plus insurance rate hikes.

Recent studies indicate a DWI arrest and conviction in Texas can cost $5,000 up to $24,000 or more.

TxDOT advises drivers who plan to drink to designate a sober driver, spend the night where they are or call a cab or friend to pick them up.
