Shots fired in city

By DELANIA TRIGG, Register Staff Writer

A disagreement between two men may have led one of the men to shoot at the other during an incident Monday night.

Police Chief Steven Fleming said officers were on East Scott Street talking to a suspect wanted for an unrelated offense when a woman pulled up and told officers her son had been shot at on North Morris Street.

“The officers confirmed the warrants on the subject and left to go to North Morris Street,” Fleming said.

There they found Anthony Jerod Kemp, 32, a Culberson Street resident, who told them an individual in a white Ford Expedition followed him for a time and then stopped and took five shots in his direction.

One of the bullets apparently struck Kemp’s vehicle. Officers recovered bullet casings from the street, Fleming said.

Kemp told police the incident began when he noticed the Expedition circling while he was inside a residence on Field Street around 10:40 that evening.

“He (Kemp) left the residence and traveled north to Mill Street where he noticed the vehicle again. At the intersection of Mill and Highway 82, he turned east and then north onto Culberson Street and again saw the vehicle. The victim said the suspect’s vehicle traveled into his lane as if to stop him, so he (Kemp) increased his speed to try to get the vehicle off him. When he looked back he noticed it looked like the vehicle stopped, and he saw a muzzle flash from a gun,” Fleming said.

Kemp told officers he believes the suspect fired five shots at his vehicle. According to a GPD incident report, Kemp was not injured in the shooting.

He also apparently knows the suspect and told police the two had a disagreement.

Fleming said the incident is under investigation.
