Cooke County —
Strong wind was declared a major factor in two notable incidents in Cooke County on Sunday evening, neither of which caused severe injuries.
Officials said both a vehicle rollover on southbound North Interstate 35, near Valley View, and a wildfire that bordered Cooke and Grayson counties, originated from powerful gusts.
Mark Tackett of the Department of Public Safety said straight winds blew the trailer of a semi-truck onto another vehicle that was near exit 491 of the interstate.
The incident produced minor injuries, Tackett explained — but caused a traffic jam that extended six miles. Names were not available at press time.
And more than 12 local fire departments responded to a wildfire Sunday evening near Delaware Bend Road, which extends between Cooke and Grayson counties. Cooke County Fire Marshal Ray Fletcher said more than 100 acres were consumed in the fire, which was reportedly a possible arson later spread by wind.
No injuries were reported, but the Texas Forest Service was consulted to provide bulldozers so that firefighters could travel through the fire’s forested area.
Members of Lindsay, Callisburg, Whitesboro, Muenster, Oak Ridge, Howe, Gordonville, Pottsboro, Gunter and Sherwood Shores fire departments, along with Cooke and Grayson county officers, assisted with the scene.
