Pecan Creek project to begin in August

During Wednesday’s Rotary meeting, City Manager Barry Sullivan discussed the Pecan Creek Flood Damage Reduction Project.

The true goal of the project, he said, is to reduce the damage caused by flood.

However this project, once completed, will not alleviate the type of flood Gainesville received in 2007.

“We had never received that much rain here before in recorded history,” said Sullivan. “People who live in a 100 year flood plain will still have a good chance that they are going to flood and those who are in a flood-way are at more risk.”

The area between Olive and Belcher Streets, that stops just north of Moss Street, is expected to be expanded to allow 3.5 times more the current water capacity.

In August, Sullivan added, the construction to rebuild the California Street and Broadway Street bridges will begin.
