Cooke County — By distributing dictionaries to many third grade students throughout Cooke County this October, the Cooke County Republican Women (CCRW) organization continued a literacy project that its membes have supported for years.

Literacy is an ongoing emphasis of both the National Federation of Republican Women and the Texas Federation of Republican Women. Members of those organizations encourage local clubs to promote literacy in their communities.

As a result, Republican women throughout the country have joined other civic groups in embracing The Dictionary Project.

The goal of the program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary.

The project focuses on students at the third grade level. CCRW Literacy Chairman Laurie Sawyer delivered dictionaries to Callisburg, Walnut Bend, Lindsay, Era, Sivells Bend, Muenster, Sacred Heart and St.  Mary's Catholic School. Barbara Felderhoff and Pauline Lesch presented the books at Valley View Elementary School. Members of the Rotary Club recently adopted Chalmers Elementary School for this project.

For information about CCRW or the club's literacy initiatives, contact CCRW President Susan Hughes at (940) 727-4468 or Chairman Laurie Sawyer at (940) 668-8366.
