Gainesville —
Tuesday’s regular Gainesville City Council meeting included the following actions:
• Mayor Jim Goldsworthy presented the “Star of North Texas” certificate of recognition and medallion to Jack Reeves, recognizing Reeves’s nine years of volunteer service to the Gainesville Meals on Wheels program delivering meals five days a week — and service on Saturdays when needed for the DASH Program. Reeves was praised in the proclamation for his efforts, steady commitment and for making a positive difference to the people in the community who count on his service.
• Goldsworthy read and presented a proclamation declaring the week of July 15-21, 2012, as “National Zookeeper Week” in recognition of zookeepers and their role in animal conservation and education, and encouraging citizens to visit the Frank Buck Zoo. Zoo staff members attended to receive the proclamation.
• Goldsworthy read and presented a proclamation declaring the month of July as “Parks and Recreation Month” in recognition of Gainesville Parks and Recreation personnel who maintain 212 acres of park land in Gainesville for residents and visitors. Parks and Recreation personnel were present to receive the proclamation.
• Council members reappointed Richard Lira, Nancy Brannon, and Mike McKenzie to the Airport Advisory Board to serve two-year appointments that expire July 2014.
• Council members approved an extension of the existing bank depository agreement with First State Bank of Gainesville for an additional two years under the same terms and conditions. (The original contract was for three years with option to extend for a total contract term of five years.) Members noted that First State Bank qualifies for the agreement since it meets all the requirements for city depository services and works well with city officials.
• Council members selected Eikon Consultant Group of Sanger to provide engineering services for final design, plans, specifications, construction contracts and estimates, bidding services, and construction administration for a water park facility for the Leonard Park Pool. City Manager Barry Sullivan said five engineering firms responded to the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) on July 13, and all firms were qualified. He recommended Eikon, citing it as a local firm with knowledge of the city.

The Big One: Preparing for mid-America earthquake
Part 5 of a five-part series
It’s a bleak scenario. A massive earthquake along the New Madrid fault kills or injures 60,000 people in Tennessee. A quarter of a million people are homeless. The Memphis airport – the country’s biggest air terminal for packages – goes off-line. Major oil and gas pipelines across Tennessee rupture, causing shortages in the Northeast. In Missouri, another 15,000 people are hurt or dead. Cities and towns throughout the central U.S. lose power and water for months. Losses stack up to hundreds of billions of dollars. -
National Transportation Safety Board considers lowering blood alcohol levels for drivers
Members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have announced new recommendations in their continued quest to end drunk driving.
During the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, alcohol is a common theme in many celebratory activities throughout the nation and state, and, therefore, many Texans unnecessarily die in vehicular accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers.
This past week, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) officials announced several new recommendations relating to drunk driving, including lowering the national blood alcohol content (BAC) standard from .08 to .05. -
