Fiske files for county attorney

On Friday, a familiar name from a recent election’s ballot announced her candidacy.

Frieda Fiske, a Lake Kiowa resident who came within about 30 votes of unseating County Judge Bill Freeman in the 2006 Republican Primary, filed the paperwork to run as a Republican for the office of County Attorney.

The office is currently held by Tanya Davis, who did not return a call by press time. A story on Davis ran in the Dec. 20, 2007, Register.

In an interview Monday, Fiske said she is qualified for the position, having served as an attorney and judge for many years.

“The county attorney uses all of the skill set I’ve developed over the last 26 years,” Fiske said. “I feel that I can institute some new business approaches and a new point of view, and make a positive impact on the county.”

Fiske said if elected she would work to put a greater emphasis on collecting hot checks and would help the county collect delinquent fines.

“I understand that about 95 percent of all cases are settled by plea bargain instead of going to trial,” she said. “Some courts make it a condition of probation if they (the defendants) pay their fines. Perhaps that would be a good plan to follow for this county.”

According to the Jan. 1, 2006, Register, Fiske spent 13 years as a municipal judge for the city of Dallas. Before that she was a criminal defense attorney and a mother of three children.

Fiske and her husband James have been a part-time residents of Lake Kiowa, a gated community in southeast Cooke County, since 1990. The couple moved there as full-time residents following Frieda Fiske’s retirement as judge.

Today is the last day to file in either party’s primary. See Thursday’s Register for a complete list of all candidates.
