Brown Bag Book Review

The NCTC Library’s Brown Bag Book Review meets at noon the first Thursday of the months of September through May (except for January).

The review is in the NCTC Library Lyceum meeting room on the Gainesville Campus. All book lovers are welcome to attend and bring a friend. Drinks are provided.

Common Threads Quilt Guild

The June 8 meeting will be at Whaley Methodist Church, 701 Rosedale, with social starting at 6:30 p.m. and meeting begining at 7 p.m. June's program will be Stain Glass Quilts without using bias, given by Anita Bradshaw.

Upcoming programs will include Redwork History in July by Connie Lefton and national teacher and lecturer Alice Wilhoit"s program on applique quilts in August. Come and enjoy the evening and learn more of the art of quilting.

Whether you are selling tickets, organizing props, sewing costumes, or performing to adoring crowds, volunteering some time at BSP will be time well spent.

Cooke County Library

Cooke County Librarian Jennifer Johnson-Spence has announced the Cooke County Library has expanded its hours to 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

A new site provides all kinds of information for the library such as a story hour schedule, etc.

“Every third Tuesday of the month, there will be a special story hour for the kids aged 5 and up,” Johnson-Spence said. “Separating the ages during the summer reading program was very effective, so I decided to do it once a month during the school year.”

The Cooke County Library is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays; and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

GAVA volunteers for murals, art work donations for worthy causes, free advice on projects and art, children and adult classes taught by several members, provides a scholarship for a high school senior who plans to major or minor in art, supplies for youth winners of the NCTC art show and many other worthy projects.

GAVA was organized in 1992 by several interested people and has grown to nearly 60 members to date. We promote interest in the arts through development and knowledge of the visual arts.

Butterfield Stage

Auditions for the Butterfield Stage Youth Playhouse production of “Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf” were held May 1 at 7 p.m. and May 2 at 2 p.m. at Butterfield Stage.

Children and adults will delight in the whirlwind antics of the three pigs, a French-Canadian woodsman and Cornelius B.B. Wolf, who might actually get something to eat, if he doesn’t keep blowing things away.

Performance dates are June 12-14 and 19-21. Tickets go on sale to season members on June 1 and to the general public on June 8.

Butterfield Stage is pleased to announce a return of Jennifer Savidge-Fuller to our stage in a one-woman show entitled “A Woman of Independent Means.” This show is an award-winning production of Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey’s novel of the same name.

Jennifer Savidge-Fuller will portray Bess Steed Garner, a character based on the playwright’s grandmother. Garner’s story is a grand unfolding tale of what it was like to be an adventurous spirit in the first seven decades of the American Century. During a period when terms such as “liberated” and “feminist” had yet to become ingrained in the popular lexicon, Bess lives her life exactly as she pleases. Through challenge and triumph, depression and wealth, wars and peace, Bess is emblematic of the fierce courage and independent spirit of the emerging American Woman of the 20th Century.

Performances of this fund-raising production will be May 14 and 15.

Butterfield Stage and Noah’s Ark will present Andrea Offner and Friends in an evening of musical entertainment entitled “Swan Song” on May 16 at 7 p.m. This show will feature the musical talents of master guitarist Bob Jones and the vocal talents of Andrea Offner, Dr. Mike Linder, Kellie Corbitt, the North Texas Youth Chorale and many other local talents. All proceeds from this show will benefit Butterfield Stage Youth Playhouse and Noah’s Ark. Tickets go on sale May 4.
