Cooke County 4-H hosts model horse show

Gainesville — Hundreds of horses arrived at the First State Bank Conference Center Monday as the Cooke County 4-H model horse show was held with participants from all across Cooke County in attendance.

The 4-H club members were also part of the Midnight Mustang group which sponsored the event

Accredited equine and horsemanship judge Sue Stewart was on hand to determine best model in each class.

“With these shows, it is all about condition not how old or collectible the models are,” Stewart said. “We look at the overall conformation of the breed, any damage indicated and if the legs are straight, similar to what we look for in halter classes of real horses.”

Stewart has been a judge in the horse world since the 1970’s and has been an expert judge of model horses since 1992.

In the show, the models are separated by breed with  23 classes for 4-H club members and 19 classes for open adult classes consisting primarily of 4-H parents.

The show was open to all Cooke County 4-H students and Clover Kids. Breyer and non Breyer brand horses were eligible for entry. All classes are halter classes meaning the models did not have any additional tack.

4-H club volunteer Amy McCormick coordinated the event and was glad that so many 4-H kids from across the county were on hand to participate in the event.

“Collecting models is a big deal in many areas across the country,” McCormick said. “It is so neat that youth, who love horses, but may not own one, can enter this horse show.”
