Kiwanis contributes to NCTC endowed scholarship fund

Gainesville — The Gainesville Kiwanis Club has a history of supporting North Central Texas College dating back to 1924, and the current group of Kiwanis Club members are determined to uphold that tradition.

Local Kiwanis members presented a check to Debbie Sharp, NCTC vice-president of institutional advancement, during a meeting on Oct. 23. The funds, which came from donations made by members during the “happy minutes” portion of their 2011-12 meetings, will be added to the “Kiwanis Club Endowed Scholarship at NCTC.”

In 2001, the club established the original endowed scholarship with a gift of $12,500 to benefit students that demonstrate strong involvement in community service projects. Over the years, the club has made additional contributions to this scholarship, raising the balance to more than $17,000 and the current endowment level to $13,000. Just in the past five years, 16 scholarships have been awarded at $300 each for NCTC students.

The Gainesville Kiwanis Club’s history with the college dates back almost 90 years. In 1924, the local Kiwanis Club endorsed a resolution to promote the establishment of a junior college in Gainesville. One month later, Gainesville City Council voted to give the college the go-ahead.

The Gainesville Kiwanis Club became the parent organization of Gainesville Junior College, now called North Central Texas College.

At the Oct. 23 meeting, Sharp gave club members and update on the college including the enrollment record that was set this fall. NCTC surpassed the 10,000-student mark system wide, marking the first time that the college has had enrollment of over 10,000 students.

For more information about how to donate to NCTC contact Sharp at (940) 668-3305 or by e-mail at dsharp@nctc.edu.
