North Central Texas College will celebrate Black History Month with a special program in February.
The program “Living the Legacy – Second Time Around” will be presented at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 21 at the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts on the NCTC Gainesville campus.
As in past years, the program will feature special music, tributes and dances, along with a special guest speaker.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Cheryl “Action” Jackson.
Jackson’s personal story is one of overcoming obstacles and making a difference in the world.
In her life, she has gone from homeless and hungry to distributing more than a million pounds of food through her charity, Minnie’s Food Pantry.
America fell in love with Jackson when she became the first winner on the television show “The American Bible Challenge” hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy. Jackson and her team won $25,000 for her charity.
She has also appeared on national television shows such as ABC’s “World News Tonight” with Diane Sawyer and “Deal or No Deal.” She even graced Oprah Winfrey’s national stage.
She has produced her own television show called “Living On Purpose” and she’s interviewed celebrities like Magic Johnson, Will Smith, Deion Sanders, Emmitt Smith and even Winfrey.
Jackson also authored the book “What in the World Are You Doing?”
Her food pantry allows families to walk the red carpet while being served with candles and music in the background.
She currently resides in Plano with her husband of 26 years, Artis, and her sons Artis Jr., and Robert.
The program will also include special musical performances from the Gainesville Men’s Choir, The Jacksons and the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Choir. Students of all ages will also read tributes and two special dances are planned.
The celebration is open to the public at no charge.
