Chamber collects items for soldiers

Gainesville — Guests at this year’s Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce can help improve the lives of American soldiers by participating in a donation drive at the chamber’s annual banquet set for Thursday at the Gainesville Civic Center.  

The following is a list of items most requested by troops:

Foods and snacks: Beef Jerky / Slim Jims, coffee (ground or whole; instant or drip), hot chocolate packets, herbal teas, instant drink mixes (Gatorade, Kool-Aid, Crystal Light), pumpkin seeds / sunflower seeds (salted), tuna in foil pouches (no cans), protein powders / protein bars / Cliff bars

Entertainment: Batteries: “AA”, “AAA” and “C” are the most requested, DVD movies (new or used - recent releases), Xbox games (new or used), PS2 games (new or used), Portable CD players / head phones.

Toiletries: Body wash, hand sanitizer, facial cleansers, baby wipes (travel size), eye drops, nasal spray, deodorant (travel size). Organizers ask that hotel samples not be donated.

  • Texas adds more than 33K new jobs in April

    Texas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm employment expanded by 33,100 jobs in April. Texas added 326,100 jobs from April 2012 to April 2013. The state’s annual growth rate in April stood at 3.0 percent, and has been above 2.5 percent since the beginning of 2012. Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged in April at 6.4 percent. It remains well below the nation’s April unemployment rate of 7.5 percent.
