NCTC students wear red for heart health

Gainesville — Cosmetology students at North Central Texas College are giving back to the community by donating their time and skills to benefit February’s Heart Health Month.

The American Heart Association, partnering with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, created National Wear Red Day held on the first Friday in February.

Each year millions of men and women across the United States come together to wear red in support of fighting this deadly disease.

The cosmetology students voted to donate proceeds from their Tuesday sales to the American Heart Association throughout the month of February. They also encourage each other to wear red on Tuesdays to bring further awareness to this cause.

NCTC Program Coordinator Shirley Meek said she is proud and supportive of the student’s involvement and dedication to this cause.

“These are great kids and are involved with many Outreach programs,” Meek said. “One common trait they have is a giving heart to help others feel good about themselves so the American Heart Association is a natural fit.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. One in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke resulting in an estimated 2,200 deaths per day.

Heart disease is also known as the “silent killer.” Many individuals are not aware that they have a problem until a heart attack strikes.

Death can be swift and unexpected. Regular checkups are encouraged for everyone despite family history.

“Everyone knows of someone that has had heart problems or passed away from a heart condition,” Meek noted. “ It is a tragic thing to go through for both the victim and the family. We hope that our efforts will not only raise revenue to assist in research and prevention but will also bring awareness to those that might not think it could happen to them.”

In addition to their February donations, NCTC cosmetology students offer haircuts for men, women and children on Mondays for $2. Additional services are available at reduced prices as well. For more information regarding costs and appointments contact the cosmetology department at 668-4210.
