Seven local candidates file to run in March primary

Staff Report

Gainesville — Staff report

Republican County Chair Chuck Bartush recently reported that seven candidates appeared at the county’s Republican headquarters on Saturday — the first day to file for a position on the Republican ballot for a primary election set for March 4.

Incumbents who announced their reelection included John H. Morris, county court-at-law judge; Rebecca Lawson, county clerk; Leon Klement, Precinct 4 county commissioner; and Dorthy Lewis, justice of the peace for JP Precinct 1.

New candidates include Byron R. Berry, who has filed for county judge; Vince Rippy, who has filed for Precinct 2 county commissioner; and Carroll L. Johnson, who has filed for justice of the peace for JP Precinct 4.

In a related release, Mac Thornberry [R-Clarendon] commented after formally filing his candidacy to represent the 13th congressional district of Texas during the 114th Congress.

The 13th district includes more than 40,000 square miles. It encompasses the Texas Panhandle, goes south into the South Plains area north of Lubbock, and then runs east across the Red River Valley through Wichita Falls to Cooke County.

"I am honored that folks in this district hired me to represent them in Washington during some very difficult times for our country,” Thornberry said. “I never forget who I work for.  With every vote I take, I try hard to represent the views and the values of folks here at home, to give our area a strong voice in their government.

“At the same time, I try to do what's right for the future of our country,” he continued. “I will continue opposing government overreach while fighting for common-sense, conservative policies that keep America safe and get the country back on the right track.”

Anyone needing information or wishing to file for their own place on the Republican ballot can appear from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays during the filing period at the county Republican headquarters, located at 701 E. California St., Suite 304, or by scheduling an appointment with Chuck Bartush by calling (940) 759-2913.

The filing period ends at 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, after which time a complete list of local Republican primary candidates will be available. Information about the candidate list will also be posted at www.cookegop.com and on this organization’s Facebook page.
