Gainesville —
Butterfield Stage, Gainesville’s community theater, is presenting its third annual “Olde Tyme Radio Show,” titled “The Red Rose” and set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, on Butterfield’s main stage.
The show is derived from a format made popular by actor Dick Powell and broadcast on both radio and television in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The format reflects the style of old radio productions where the “cast” actually reads the script on stage while doing the live broadcast. The audience is encouraged to participate with “boos” and “hisses” and yells and screams, which makes the night a lot of fun.
Music for the show is provided by the original soundtrack from the broadcast, which adds to the authentic and nostalgic feeling of the show.
Several of local Gainesville performers will participate in the show, including John Rodgers, Sally Page and Tom Chase as well as newcomer Chuck Aaron, who will be making his Butterfield debut.
Aaron is a minister at Whaley Methodist Church in Gainesville and is a welcome addition to the cast.
Other cast members include Marina Greenhill and Frank Mahnich who were cast in last year's “Sherlock Holmes Mystery,” and Rich Johnson, who was co-director of the latest Butterfield hit show, “Driving Miss Daisy.”
The show is presented for one night only and has enjoyed sell-out status for the last two years.
Snacks and drinks will be provided at no charge.
Tickets are $20 and are now available at the Butterfield Stage Players box office at (940) 665-1284. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
