Local library offers summer programs

Gainesville — The Cooke County Library is embracing the summer heat by providing free public activities and programs for children, teens and adults.

On Tuesday, the library is hosting a special storyhour for students kindergarten through the third grade. This program is called “It’s Book Time with Ronald McDonald.”

According to Cooke County Library director Jennifer Johnson-Spence, the program is designed to help address library, reading and literacy in a manner so that children can understand. The storyhour uses a mixture of magic, music, puppets and fun to inform students on the importance of taking care of books and why they should want to read.

The program will take approximately 45 minutes and will be held at the Butterfield Stage Playhouse at 10:30 a.m. No sign ups are necessary for the program.

The library is also hosting a teen writing workshop as a part of the “Let’s Get Graphic” program. The focus of this workshop is to inform teens on how to write and design graphic books.

This program is funded through the Dollar General Youth Literacy grant that Johnson-Spence applied for last year. This $2,500 grant was used to purchase both non-fiction and fiction books and other educational purposes.

According to Johnson-Spence, she has spent $1,500 on new books for the library.

Children ages 10 and up are welcome to attend the event.

The first portion of this program is slated for July 27 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The library has invited graphic books author Anastasia Suen to the class to help explain how to write for comic/graphic books.

“Suen will talk to the kids about the differences in writing for a graphic book like how to format and the purpose of writing in balloons,” Johnson-Spence said.

A second class will be offered two weeks later according to Johnson-Spence. The students can come back to the library and learn to use online websites to create their graphic books. The information they learn during the class will be useful in that they will be able to finish their stories at home.

The library is also offering programs to help adults who are unemployed. The first of two classes will be held on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This class will help adults learn how to update and create a resume. The second class will be held on the following Thursday, July 28, also from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This class will teach how to search for a job online.

According to Johnson-Spence these programs are designed to show those who don’t have computer skills the basic skills of searching for employment.

“Due to the economy and budget cuts, we may not be able to bring these programs back,” Johnson-Spence said.

Both of these classes are limited in space and can only accommodate 15 people. Anyone wishing to attend should call the library at (940) 668-5530. The deadline for the first class is Tuesday and July 26 for the second class.
