Cooke County commissioners deemed an area burn ban unnecessary during Monday’s regular meeting.
Fire Marshal Ray Fletcher announced an average countywide Keetch-Byram Drought Index number in the low 500s — low enough at present, he said, to avoid the need for any kind of ban on outdoor burning.
“All things considered, I think we’re good for quite a while,” he said, adding that conditions in the coming months may include cold fronts that produce dry ground.
But recent summer rainfall, Fletcher added, has kept the county safe from serious fire hazards.
“For this time of year, we’ll sure take it,” he said Monday.
