Callisburg students are UIL district champs

Special to the Register

Callisburg — Callisburg Elementary School was host to the District 11 AA UIL academic meet during December, according to a media release.

Along with Callisburg, participating schools included Bells, Howe, Pottsboro, Sadler & Southmayd, Tom Bean, Whitesboro and Whitewright.

Final results established Callisburg as the district winner with a total of 380 points; Sadler & Southmayd placed second with 225.33 points; and Pottsboro came in third with 190.66 points. “It was a very busy day,” said Derrick Conley, first-year principal at Callisburg Elementary. “This was a new alignment, and eight schools is a rather large district. With that amount of competition, I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I took the job at Callisburg, I was told about the winning tradition for UIL academics. I wanted to make sure that custom was upheld. It was amazing to see how the CES staff worked together to make the day a success.”

CES UIL coordinator Debbie Nini confirmed the winning tradition. “We have been district champions for 26 out of the past 30 years,” she said. “The various academic competitions that constitute a meet provide a platform to showcase our students’ many talents. I believe this is important to our students, their families, and our community.”

Don Metzler, Callisburg assistant superintendent, has also had a long history with UIL academics. “We have had numerous state academic UIL champions that started their winning ways at the elementary,” he said. “These students were also recipients of Texas Interscholastic League Foundation scholarships, provided by the UIL, that provided funding for their college studies.
