Callisburg —
CALLISBURG — Feedback from Callisburg ISD officials has been scarce regarding the suspension of high school basketball coach Randy Freeman on Jan. 10.
Freeman was suspended from coaching duties Jan. 10, following an alleged incident shortly after his Callisburg Lady Cats girls team lost a game to Howe. Callisburg officials refused to comment on the incident or Freeman’s suspension during the week they happened.
Attendance clerk Theresa Massey said Wednesday that Freeman was off-campus and not reachable.
“He is gone for the day,” she said.
But confirmed as of Wednesday is Freeman’s indefinite leave of absence from teaching science, which was his coaching sideline. Interim Callisburg ISD superintendent Josh Ballinger said Freeman is presently neither coaching nor teaching at the high school, but wouldn’t say how long he will stay gone.
“As far as any future considerations go, that’s still up in the air,” Ballinger said. “Everything else has been private conversations behind closed doors.”
Though details of the alleged incident haven’t been officially made available, some community support has appeared on Freeman’s behalf. A group of Callisburg students and parents have been seen wearing “Free Freeman” shirts.
Ballinger admitted to the support.
“That’s certainly the opinion of several people,” he said Wednesday. “I would like to think a lot of our teachers would have that kind of support.”
Ballinger confirmed in a Register interview shortly after Freeman’s initial suspension that in his place, assistant coach Mike Wallace will helm the Callisburg Lady Cats while Chet Baker assists.
This was a decision made after all details of the postgame incident were gathered.
“We feel it is in the best interest of all the parties involved,” Ballinger said during the interview. “Including Coach Freeman.”
But on Wednesday, the superintendent could not say how long this arrangement will continue.
“We’re trying to make the best decisions we can for the school and the girls and the community,” Ballinger said. “And when you have to consider all those parties, you have to make the right decision.”
