Morton Museum celebrates season, Cooke County history

Gainesville — Representatives of Morton Museum of Cooke County continued their publicity efforts by way of a holiday-themed ceremony Friday evening.

The museum’s annual Christmas party doubled as a method of reminding the public of the facility’s importance.

“In a town this size, we’re lucky to have a museum like this and I think the community really comes out and supports the museum, and it’s great,” said employee Misty Landers.

Despite the general support, the museum remains in regular need of money for its preservation purposes. An annual dinner and auction event at Gainesville Civic Center garners roughly 40 percent of the museum’s income, and additional donations and county funds provide aid. But the museum remains many thousands of dollars short of long-term historical projects such as the restoration of its ceiling dome, and the purchase of special preservation materials.

Former museum board member Jane Sweet, who attended Friday’s ceremony, cited the struggles ever-present in keeping a historical museum vital to its community.

“We’re trying to build a young group now and get them interested by doing more (programs) on education,” she said. “You have to get them involved in order to keep everything going. They work really hard trying to get the funds. But it takes time — time and money, as with any organization. They go through this growing period and that’s what we’re going through: growing and changing.”

Visitor Frank Mahnich, also a museum supporter, said the facility maintains a very crucial local position.

“Cooke County has such a tremendous history,” he said. “And to be able to keep that history in one place so that people can come in and visit and learn more about the things that have happened in the last 150 years is fantastic.”
