Green Valley Elementary School guidance counselor, Jeanna Koerner, sent a lesson idea to all the elementary school counselors in the Birdville school district.
She suggested that students watch a video about the 2008 football game between Gainesville State School and Faith Christian School. After watching the video, students discussed acts of kindness and their effects on everyone involved.
That’s when Lisa Loper, counselor at W.A. Porter Elementary School, contacted Tammy Holland of TJJD to learn of meaningful ways to show their support.
Holland contacted Dotty Luera, Community Relations Coordinator at the Gainesville facility, asking that she follow up with the request.
Loper needed contact information as one of her students asked if they could write letters of support.
Luera explained that the original team members that they saw in the video have been released and are doing wonderful things in their own communities. She also explained that although the football season is over, there is currently a basketball team. She explained that students could write letters and that she herself would see that they are delivered. Luera also sent a schedule of the basketball games.
Loper was very excited to learn that one of the games, scheduled in Colleyville, was only a few miles from them.
She invited the ACE Leadership group to come out and cheer for the boys. ACE members are students who volunteer their time and resources to show acceptance, courage, and empathy.
The counselors from Green Valley Elementary (Jeanna Koerner) and Smithfield Elementary (Shannon Bruce) also invited students from their schools.
Approximately 50 supportive folks arrived with colorful posters and signs for the Tornadoes.
There were students, counselors, teachers, and parents and all were cheering fans. Loper had received the first names of the Gainesville team members before the event and the elementary students made personalized posters for the boys. The Tornadoes really enjoyed seeing and hearing their names in such an encouraging way.
These acts of kindness boosted the morale, courage, and team effort of the Gainesville youth.
All the posters and signs have been saved and will be displayed at the end of the season basketball banquet.
"We appreciate the counselors and students for their initiative and their creative support," Luera said. "They made it a great game."

Texas adds more than 33K new jobs in April
Texas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm employment expanded by 33,100 jobs in April. Texas added 326,100 jobs from April 2012 to April 2013. The state’s annual growth rate in April stood at 3.0 percent, and has been above 2.5 percent since the beginning of 2012. National Transportation Safety Board considers lowering blood alcohol levels for drivers
Members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have announced new recommendations in their continued quest to end drunk driving.
During the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, alcohol is a common theme in many celebratory activities throughout the nation and state, and, therefore, many Texans unnecessarily die in vehicular accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers.
This past week, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) officials announced several new recommendations relating to drunk driving, including lowering the national blood alcohol content (BAC) standard from .08 to .05. -
