Lifelong Learning, the non-credit division of North Central Texas College, is offering new admission dates for the GED Academy in Gainesville.
Popularly known as the GED Academy, the Drop Out Recovery and Career Pathways Program financially and personally assists students in obtaining their GED, passing the THEA college entrance exam, and enrolling in career training programs at NCTC.
This grant is sponsored by the Texas Education Agency and administered through NCTC. The school is one of only two community colleges to receive the grant.
“I am thrilled with the Dropout Recovery program,” said Jessica Carlile, Drop Out Recovery Grant Coordinator at NCTC. “The majority of students enter the program and say they simply need to make a change in their lives. This program offers them opportunities to make those changes. It is exciting to see them set goals in the beginning of the program and, for many, surpass those goals and achieve even more than they ever dreamed possible.”
To be eligible, applicants to the Drop Out Recovery and Career Pathways Program must be between the ages of 18-25. They must have either last attended a Texas high school or Texas-based homeschool. Those who completed the 12th grade at a Texas high school but were unable to graduate because they could not pass a TAKS test are also encouraged to apply.
Admission sessions are scheduled for Sept. 25 and Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m., on the NCTC Gainesville campus in room 2100 of the Career and Technology Center.
Prospective students should bring a driver’s license or other ID that verifies birth date, documentation from last school attended and a willingness to learn.
To date, the GED Academy has graduated 130 students.Many of them are now attending college and working toward a degree.
“I was nervous at first, but I love my college classes,” former student Elisha Goodwin of Gainesville said. “I always thought I wanted to be a nurse, but now I’m thinking I might like to be an archeologist. I get excited every time I learn something new, and I couldn’t have done it without this program.”
