Gainesville —
The first monthly installment of Summer Sounds 2012 on Friday, May 25,
brings the concert experience to downtown Gainesville for a third
year.
Speakers are set to commence blaring on the Cooke County Courthouse
square at 6 p.m., and are expected to be heard.
“I figure we’re looking at growth and at people easing into the
routine,” said organizer Lynette Pettigrew.
The May headliner is country artist Tommy Alverson, with guests Lenzy
Lenaye and The Scotty Thurman Band to follow. Musicians for June and
July include rural-friendly players Micky And The Motorcars, The
Holler Time, James McMurtry and Midnight Drive.
“We try and pick groups that are Texas-based and Texas-known and then
some groups that would appeal to most adults,” Pettigrew said. “We
also try to encourage family-friendly headliners.”
Pettigrew added that the criteria for musician choice has a lot to do
with timing. Many of the groups featured at Summer Sounds are already
enjoying local tours and can include the Gainesville visit as a
Friday-night gig.
“There is so much talent in this area and we are very grateful that
Gainesville is located where it is,” she said. “It’s located between
Oklahoma and the WinStar casino and the Dallas area — plus Denton,
which is a music area as well. I figure we’ve had some really good
success in the past, and now this year’s the third year.”
Changes for the 2012 season mainly involve concessions. Pettigrew said
this year, a Dieter Brothers barbecue stand will also be part of the
offerings, plus at least two spots to buy adult beverages, since the
head count seems to demand it.
“The attendance and support by the community has been wonderful and
it’s a packed house,” she said.
And Pettigrew added that despite what will assuredly be a blazing
summer, the come-and-go turnout for these 2012 concert installments
may hit close to a thousand, as they have during the past two years.
“We’re just looking for a nice evening on the bricks,” she said
Thursday. “They cool off really quick, once the sun goes down behind
the buildings. The shade’s really nice and there’s always a cool
breeze coming up Commerce Street.”
