Gainesville —
A release from the Gainesville Police Department urges residents to keep their vehicles locked, in light of a recent crime rash.
The Gainesville Police Department has seen an increase in vehicle burglaries within the last few weeks.
A majority of the vehicles burglarized had been left unlocked giving thieves’ easy access to valuables.
Belva McClinton, the department’s public information officer, said there is no pattern to the burglaries — no set of streets that are being repeatedly targeted by suspects.
“In the summer we usually see an increase in burglaries,” she said, adding that while some burglaries are resolved by catching the suspects, many more of them remain open cases.
Two key burglary prevention tips:
• Hide or remove your valuables. Items of value that you keep in your car (such as navigation systems, IPods, purses, wallets, phones, etc.) that are left in the open make your car a bigger target.
• Lock your car. Again, the majority of the burglaries recently reported in Gainesville involved unlocked vehicles.
