Sivells Bend ISD approves auditor for 2012 – 2013 school year

— Special to the Register

During the June 11 meeting of the Sivells Bend Independent School District board board of trustees, the firm of Freemon, Shapard and Story was selected to perform the annual fiscal audit for the district for the school year ending August 31, 2013. This firm has been used by the district for several years and the trustees are extremely satisfied with the service they provide, Sivells Bend ISD superintendent Phil Newton said in a summary of the meeting minutes.

The board also approved a contract with Cooke County Appraisal District to assess and collect taxes for the district for the two year period beginning Jan. 1, 2014 and ending Dec. 31, 2015.

The board approved a raise to the local stipend for teachers and including teachers who have topped out on their years of service. The board also approved a raise to support staff salaries. These raises will help to offset the large increase in insurance coverage provided by TRS to active employees.

The board discussed SBISD Board Goals for 2013 – 2014 and tabled the discussion for a further planning date so that some goals can be restudied.

Frank Mahnich addressed the board about concerns over current and future status of the district. Sunday Sizelove addressed the board about plans for future test preparation of students.

In the superintendent’s report, Phil Newton reported to the board on the following items: Year-end enrollment; projected enrollment for 2013 – 2014; delinquent tax collections by Jim Robertson; cost for adult meals for April and May to the district; final “Spring Fling” figures where the district netted $6,790 for student activities; and revenues and expenditures for the district. Newton told the board that as of June 1 the district had received 98 percent of its projected revenues and only expended about 68 percent. This is with three months of payments to the state to be made. These payments will amount to $234,276 to the state by Aug. 15.

The next meeting of the Sivells Bend ISD Trustees will be July, 23 in the school library.
