Dr. Susan B. Thomas, Executive Director of the Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG), announced that TCOG will be hosting a mandatory workshop for those who are interested in applying for criminal justice grants through the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division (CJD).
TCOG is a voluntary association of the local governments in Cooke, Fannin and Grayson counties, and grant applicants can include Cooke County residents who are involved with the related agencies.
“These funds help local agencies in their efforts to assist victims of crime and prevent criminal activities in communities throughout the Texoma region,” Thomas said. “This workshop will provide applicants with the latest information about eligible activities, the award process, and the funding timeline.”
The grants are funded through the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), State Criminal Justice Planning program, and Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Act. Organizations that are eligible to apply include: state agencies, units of local government, non-profit agencies, Native American tribes, community supervision and corrections departments and councils of government.
To assist interested applicants with the requirements for grant submission, a mandatory workshop will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 in the first floor of the TCOG building, 1117 Gallagher Drive in Sherman. This workshop is provided for those who have never applied to the CJD as well as those who have previous experience with the CJD grant application process. It will provide applicants with the latest information about eligible activities, the award process and the funding timeline.
The workshop is free and requires no registration, but participation is mandatory for grant applicants.
TCOG representatives, in conjunction with the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee, provide coordination of the application process, including reviewing the applications and setting priorities for the applications. Last year, the Criminal Justice Division awarded $282,980 to eligible organizations in the Texoma region.
Established in 1968, TCOG promotes economy and efficiency in the coordinated planning and development of the tri-county region through its community and economic development activities.
Either directly, or through contractors, the council provides housing, utility assistance, and weatherization services for low-income citizens in the region and assists the elderly through a variety of Area Agency on Aging programs.
