WOODBINE — Two families are mourning the loss of loved ones today after a head-on collision near an elementary school took the lives of two local men and left several others injured.
The accident happened around 6:45 p.m., Friday on FM 3164 near the Rad Ware (Callisburg Elementary) school.
Texas Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Lonny Haschel said the collision occurred when a 2007 Pontiac Soltice driven by Jose Barletta, 52, of Gainesville struck a 1994 Toyota Camery driven by Robert Falgout, 34.
Barletta was reportedly headed north on 3164 when he crossed onto the wrong side of the highway in a no passing zone and hit Falgout’s car head-on, Haschel said.
He noted that Barletta was not attempting to pass another car.
Falgout’s car burst into flame on impact, he said.
Barletta was taken to North Texas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Falgout dead at the scene, Haschel noted.
Several people riding in Falgout’s car were injured.
Tina Falgout, 17, of Gainesville was taken by air ambulance to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.
Another passenger, Riley Browning, 12, also of Gainesville was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Dallas.
A third passenger, Chase Falgout, 10, was taken to North Texas Medical Center.
Haschel said he has no further information on the children’s conditions or the extent of their injuries.
Barletta was apparently on his way to a school program when the accident occurred.
“The accident is currently under investigation as is standard (procedure) for the highway patrol,” Haschel said.
In the meantime, friends of the Barletta family say they established a memorial fund at Gainesville’s First State Bank for Barletta’s survivors — Lorraine, Nicole, Leah and Sasha.
“All contributions would be greatly appreciated,” said Jacque Waghorn.
