Livestock Champ

Lindsay — Lindsay eighth-grader Alexandria “Alex” Harrell, 14, took home top honors at the San Antonio Junior Breeding Beef Show with 2-year-old heifer, Abby.

Harrell and her parents, Jerry and Joye Harrell, spent Wednesday through Friday last week in San Antonio while Alex and her two heifers and steer competed in the competition.

Alex and Abby were awarded Reserve Grand Champion Maine-Anjou and took home a $10,000 scholarship.

This was Alex’s first run at showing in San Antonio, and she won big.

On Friday, Alex had the opportunity to enter Abby in the supreme drive, in which Alex was awarded the scholarship.

Lindsay High School Agriculture instructor Paul Wolf said Alex was roughly the second best out of “80 head” [of cattle.]

After winning, Alex said it was a feeling she had never felt before.

Wolf said Alex also has a 1-year-old heifer, Izzy, which she will have an opportunity to show at the same show next year. Alex, however, won’t be eligible for another scholarship unless she wins Supreme Grand Champion.

“It’s a learning experience,” Alex said.

Alex will take Abby to a stock show in Houston March 8 to 11, to compete for possibly a second scholarship.

The stock show is “a combination of a glorified beauty pageant and body building competition,” for cattle, Wolf said.

Wolf said the heifers are judged on their marketability including breeding traits; confirmation— their physical characteristics; and their EPD [Expected Progeny Differences] — the breeding standard, a way to rank that heifer’s breed.

“Its basically for bragging rights,” he added. “Alex showed with the best of the best, who have animals in the state of Texas, and she handled her own,” Wolf said.

Recently, Alex also took top honors at the Cooke County 4-H Livestock Show, where she and Abby won Grand Champion at the breeding beef cattle division.

Wolf said Alex’s hard work is greatly appreciated and it is “awesome” that she is helping the Lindsay FFA make a name for itself.
