Gainesville —
The aroma of some dozen different homemade soups filled the air Sunday in the lunchroom at the First Christian Church in Gainesville.
Folks from many churches and communities here were taking part in Souper Bowl Sunday, a nationwide event held with the hope of making the NFL Super Bowl Sunday also the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving.
Volunteers in Service to Others (VISTO) director, Michelle Baldwin, said she was pleased with the participation.
“The turnout has been good,” she said. “And the soups have been really good.”
Baldwin gets serious when she talks about VISTO. “There is a great need here. Many people are going to sleep hungry.”
Baldwin said there are 910 children in 14 different schools participating in Backpack Buddies, a VISTO program that sends backpacks full of food home with the children each Friday so they have food over each weekend.
“We also want to raise awareness of the need we have here in Cooke County,” Baldwin added.
Sunday’s annual fundraiser benefits VISTO and all its outreach programs.
Mark Loewen, pastor of First Christian Church, was happy be help VISTO with Souper Bowl.
“We’ll be serving till one and are expecting some other churches to be coming to join us,” he said.
Among the delicious soups were vegetable beef, taco soup, smoked shrimp, country chicken noodle, potato, cheddar cheese soup, and white bean tomato and chicken soup.
