When the North Central Texas College Jazz Band hosts their annual fall concert on Nov. 8, a special guest will make the evening even more special.
Legendary trumpet player Bobby Burns, Jr. will be a guest artist at the concert, which is planned for 7:30 p.m., at the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts in Gainesville.
Burns, who is a member of Earth, Wind and Fire, has also recorded and performed with headliners and artists including The Temptations, The Four Tops, Boyz II Men, Tony Bennett, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Ice T.
He joined Earth, Wind and Fire in 2004. His performance credits with the band include American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, a performance for President Barack Obama at the White House, two Super Bowl shows, the Grammy Awards show and countless others.
“We’re very excited to have Bobby coming in,” NCTC Jazz Band director Marty Kobuck said. “He is currently the trumpet player for Earth, Wind and Fire, but he has been a freelance musician in Los Angeles for years. He is on the road most of the year touring with Earth, Wind and Fire, but his home base is now in Fort Worth. Through a friend of mine, we were able to put this together and get him to come to Gainesville and share the stage with us.”
The NCTC Jazz Band, which includes 17 students, willperform some old jazz standards as well as some more contemporary pieces inaddition to playing special arrangements of some classic Earth, Wind and Fire songs with Burns. The NCTC Jazz Band will share the concert with the Gainesville High School Jazz Band. Burns will play with both bands and the concert and will also provide a lecture for both the high school and college musicians the week of the performance.
“(Burns) will be talking with the students about the music business and what it takes to make it in the industry because he has had a long career,” Kobuck said.
Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults, $5 for youth and free for NCTC students.
