Gainesville —
Cooke County United Way officials discussed the organization’s 2013 campaign and released a timeline of related events during Tuesday’s “Rise and Shine” public breakfast meeting.
Campaign Chairperson Laura Otts said the organization’s “Pacesetter” campaign began Aug. 1, with several area businesses and agencies now working to reach the year’s fundraising goal of $398,000.
The goal amount is an increase against the 2012 amount of $390,000, she added, since the monetary needs of the 18 local beneficiary agencies have increased through the past year.
“We’ve kind of hit the ground running,” Otts said. “We really call upon our community and our county to send from their hearts to support these agencies. And when you look at what Cooke County gives, compared to other United Ways of our size, it’s amazing what Cooke County will do.”
The timeline of Cooke County United Way-related events follows:

The Big One: Preparing for mid-America earthquake
Part 5 of a five-part series
It’s a bleak scenario. A massive earthquake along the New Madrid fault kills or injures 60,000 people in Tennessee. A quarter of a million people are homeless. The Memphis airport – the country’s biggest air terminal for packages – goes off-line. Major oil and gas pipelines across Tennessee rupture, causing shortages in the Northeast. In Missouri, another 15,000 people are hurt or dead. Cities and towns throughout the central U.S. lose power and water for months. Losses stack up to hundreds of billions of dollars. -
