Patrons of theater have a special chance this evening to lend their local museum a helping hand.
The My Daisy catering company will provide the refreshments prior to a special benefit performance of “Driving Miss Daisy” at Butterfield Stage Theater — set for 7:30 p.m. — and the public is invited to the 1940s-themed cocktail party that begins at 6:30 p.m. at the theater.
Tickets are $15 and proceeds benefit Morton Museum of Cooke County.
The party’s theme is a fine match for the setting of the play, which was also a film in 1989, starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. The story pans a period of 25 years in an unbroken series of segments. At the beginning of the play, Daisy Werthan, a 72-year-old southern Jewish widow, has just crashed her brand-new car while backing it out of the garage. After the accident, her son Boolie insists that she is not capable of driving. Over her protests, he hires a driver, Hoke Coleburn, an uneducated African-American who is 60. At first, Daisy wants nothing to do with Hoke, but their friendship grows and becomes a lifetime commitment.
The local show, directed by John Rodgers and Rich Johnson, features Lee Skinner as Miss Daisy, Corey Hardin as Hoke and John Rodgers as Boolie, son of Miss Daisy.
Other “Daisy” shows are set for Friday and Saturday evening. But tonight’s presentation is part of a new program called “The Benefit Performance Series,” designed to support local charities and registered “501c3” nonprofit organizations.
“It is important that our community continues to work together to provide generous support for local charitable and service organizations,” said Butterfield Marketing Director Frank Mahnich.

Morton Museum gets dolled up for summer

“We are building on the huge success of our recent auction and fundraiser by planning many wonderful events throughout the summer for our community,” museum director Jayleane Smith said. “ This will be a wonderful time for groups to come to the museum and see our new exhibits. -
