The American Cancer Society’s (ACS) 2013 installment of Relay For Life of Cooke County is set for Friday, May 3, and organizers want your help in celebrating more birthdays.
“Relay For Life” is a family-oriented event that mobilizes communities across the country to celebrate survivors and caregivers, to remember loved ones lost to cancer, and to raise money for the fight against the disease. Admission to the overnight fundraiser is free and participants don’t have to be on a team or be a cancer survivor or a caregiver to benefit from the event.
“We want the community to celebrate more birthdays together as we raise money to fight cancer,” organizer Kyle Ingram said.
Relay For Life of Cooke County takes place 7 p.m. Friday, May 3, through 7 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Gainesville Independent School District’s Leopard Stadium. Visitors are urged to stay during the entire event — which begins at sundown with the Relay For Life luminaria ceremony.
Luminaria are glowing bags donated in honor or memory of someone who has battled cancer. Participants circle the track surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer.
“This beautiful ‘Luminaria Lap’ honors our cancer survivors and remembers those lost to the disease,” Ingram said.
Following the ceremony, the Leopard Stadium party continues through the night with music from Billy Bob and the Green Machine, carnival food and games, live entertainment, hot air balloon rides and more. All proceeds go to ACS, which turns 100 this year as the Cooke County version of Relay For Life turns 17. Ingram reported that last year, Cooke County residents came together and raised more than $125,000, reportedly the most ever locally raised for ACS during a single year.
“Many participants are our family, friends, and neighbors who have been cured of cancer themselves,” said event chair Stacy Dickerson. “Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made not just in cancer cure rates, but also in the quality of life following cancer treatment.”
Luminaria may be purchased for $5 by calling (940) 736-6031, e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by visiting www.RelayForLife.org/CookeCoTX.
