Gainesville —
North Central Texas College paid tribute to 61 students for outstanding academic performance and exemplary citizenship at the recent fall semester induction ceremony for new members of Phi ThetaKappa (PTK) honor society.
PTK is the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than 1.3 million members and 1,100 chapters located in all 50 United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany and Japan.
Robert Burton, advisor for NCTC’s award-winning Psi Iota chapter, said membership in PTK is by invitation only, extended to students who have completed at least 12 hours of coursework leading to an associate degree with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
“We are very proud of these students for earning one of the highest distinctions that can be earned at our college for academic excellence,” said NCTC Vice-President of Instruction Dr. Brent Wallace, who welcomed the new members at Saturday’s ceremony.
The fall induction ceremony was held Saturday at theFirst State Bank Center for the Performing Arts on the NCTC Gainesville campus.
“Phi Theta Kappa membership is not only viewed as an exceptional academic honor at NCTC,” said Professor Burton, a member of the college English faculty, “but also as something that distinguishes its members as being among our most effective campus leaders.
“Once they’ve completed their education, we expect them to become outstanding community leaders as well.”
Saturday’s ceremony included a keynote address by NCTC Philosophy instructor Jack O’Connor, along with a special address by Phi Theta Kappa State Officer Julie Flickner.
Dr. Wallace, along with NCTC President Dr. Eddie Hadlock, were also presented with honorary membership in the Psi Iota chapter.
The Fall 2012 PTK officers were also recognized. They include Michael Adesanya (Vice-President of Fellowship and Membership), Heather Baldi (Graham Ambassador), Megan Hill (Vice-President of Communication), Brittney O’Connor (Vice-President of Leadership), Rowena Prather (Vice-President of Service) and Jenny Warmbrodt (Vice-President of Scholarship).
Local PTK inductees include:
Gainesville residents Tessa Rose Cranston, Aaron Brandon Fleitman, Karen S. Lewis, Conner David Markle, Patricia Millan and Aubry Cheyenne Debord of Whitesboro.

National Transportation Safety Board considers lowering blood alcohol levels for drivers
Members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have announced new recommendations in their continued quest to end drunk driving.
During the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, alcohol is a common theme in many celebratory activities throughout the nation and state, and, therefore, many Texans unnecessarily die in vehicular accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers.
This past week, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) officials announced several new recommendations relating to drunk driving, including lowering the national blood alcohol content (BAC) standard from .08 to .05. -
