Officers arrest third suspect in beating death

Gainesville — Staff report

Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officials announced a third arrest in connection with the Sept. 8 murder of Alberto Gonzalez, 44.

GPD Public Information Officer Belva McClinton declared the arrest of Dammond Defferal Johnson, 38, an African-American man arrested shortly before midnight Wednesday at a resident on Carnes Street in Gainesville. Johnson’s arrest aligns him with Fabian Cervantez, 30, a Hispanic man arrested Sept. 13, in the 2600 block of East Highway 82; and Marcy Leigh Hunt, 38, a Caucasian woman arrested Sept. 14, at a residence on County Road 239.

As reported on Sept. 10, Gonzalez was apparently beaten to death on Sunday, Sept. 8, inside a house at 719 N. Taylor St. in Gainesville — a rental house he reportedly owned and was remodeling at the time of the attack.

McClinton added that despite this third arrest, a investigation into the death of Gonzalez continues. Persons with information are urged to contact the GPD at (940) 668-7777. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call the Crimes Tips Hotline at (940) 612-0000 or can message the department via Facebook at facebook.com/GTPolice.
