Gainesville —
Tuesday’s 90th-anniversary banquet for Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce honored history and fed the masses in tall style.
Most notable at the ceremony were a locally produced historical 24-minute video that chronicled the Gainesville chamber’s history and success — a collaboration between historian Shana Powell and Lost Dog Productions — and a set of annual awards for chamber volunteers.
Kay Lunnon received the chamber’s “Volunteer of the Year” award, while energy company Orteq Technologies owners Cody and Cole Ortowski took the “Business of the Year” plaque. Special awards also went to retiring Gainesville chamber board members Cheryl Davis and Bill Hamilton, plus retiring chairman Chris Cypert.
Banquet emcee Byron Berry later announced Sarah Beck and Elizabeth Campbell as winners of the evening’s raffle drawing. And in thanking the audience at evening’s end, he reminded them they were celebrating the chamber of commerce at a special time, in a city that has immense progress going for it.
“You go around downtown Gainesville and you go down Grand Avenue, and Highway 82 and soon-to-be-finished I-35, and there’s commerce all over Gainesville,” Berry said to the audience. “We’re pretty much full-up, and it’s a wonderful time to be involved.”
