AUSTIN —
The Texas Comptroller’s Office reported a Cooke County total of $593.355 in sales tax allocations for May, which represents a continuing trend of revenue increase statewide.
Total Texas sales tax revenue was $1.87 billion during the past month, an 11.4 percent rise over April 2010 figures. A press release said current April revenue totals, plus May allocation payments to local governments, represent sales from March as reported by monthly tax filers — plus January, February and March sales reported by quarterly tax filers.
“This is the 13th straight month in which state sales tax revenue has increased,” Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said about April in the release. “Business spending in sectors such as the oil and gas industry helped boost sales tax collections. Tax revenue from retail spending also showed growth.”
Cooke County’s allocation payment is up by 10.43 percent over the May 2010 amount of $537,355. The comptroller’s local breakdown shows Gainesville received $525.135.90 for May, a 10.71 percent increase over the same period next year. Lindsay received $11,354.74, a 5.27 percent increase; Muenster received $38.986.03, a 3.15 percent increase; Oak Ridge received $6,048.76, a 3.45 percent increase; and Valley View received $11,881.79, a 37.68 percent increase. All cities have a tax rate of 1.5 percent.
County Judge John Roane, a Valley View resident, said the continuing rise in state and county revenue is encouraging, certainly when the rise endures as long as it has and even if doesn’t exactly mean full economic recovery.
“We’re certainly not out of the woods by any means and it may be a while before we are,” Roane said. “But one of the first indicators is the increase in the local sales tax. That (amount) would be just a very small percentage of our county budget. But, by the same token, it’s a good indicator.”
The release said Combs has distributed $600.1 million in statewide allocations on Friday, up 5.8 percent compared to May 2010. During this calendar year, local sales tax allocations to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts are up 7.1 percent compared to a year ago. The release added Combs will send May sales tax allocations of $403.4 million to Texas cities, up 4.7 percent compared to May 2010. Year-to-date, city sales tax allocations are up 6.2 percent compared to the same period last year.
Texas counties will receive sales tax payments of $37.4 million, the release added, which is an amount up 11 percent from one year ago. Calendar year-to-date, county sales tax allocations are 12.6 percent higher than last year.
Also, $25.6 million will go to 174 special purpose taxing districts throughout the state, an amount up 13.9 percent compared to last May. And the release said ten local transit systems will get $133.5 million in sales tax allocations, which is a 6.4 percent increase compared to a year ago.
