Gainesville —
The upcoming Splash Day should provide an affordable way to stay cool in outdoors while browsing nature.
The second annual Frank Buck Zoological Society fundraiser is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday in Leonard Park and offers four inflatable pool “splash zones” along with refreshments and access to the city zoo.
Society President Karen Cook said this year’s installment of Splash Day, which coincides with National Zookeeper Appreciation Week, is revamped from last year.
“We moved it into the park so we would have more room and people would be able to go to the splash zones, take advantage of the park and ride the train,” she said. “Everything that we do at the society raises money for new animals and new exhibits.”
Cook said the zoo officially has no upcoming purchases planned, having recently spent $12,000 on a flamingo exhibit, $10,000 for a fox exhibit and $30,000 for two bears. Splash Day was initiated in 2010 as a family-friendly way to draw more patrons to Frank Buck Zoo following city budget cuts. Tickets are $5 per person and hot dog meals are $3 each.
And at those rates, attendance to the one-day event would have to run in the thousands for proceeds to match the expenses associated with a single animal exhibit.
But regardless of how it finally profits the zoo, Splash Day is a “money’s worth” guarantee for whoever visits.
“It’s something people are always talking about: there’s nothing to do,” Cook said. “The whole family can take advantage of this. They can see the animals when they’re the most active and ride the train. It’s a great time for kids to have if they’re having birthday parties. This is your entertainment. The park is beautiful right now and the zoo is fantastic.
“You can’t go anywhere and do that for five dollars,” she said.
