Gainesville —
A sixth-grader at Gainesville Middle School took first place Wednesday at the Cooke County Spelling Bee.
Jocelyn Sanchez will travel to Dallas on March 24 to compete in the regional bee along with one winner from the other 37 counties from north and east Texas that make up the Dallas region.
The county bee was held at the Muenster Independent School District cafetorium and featured three Gainesville Independent School District students, one fourth grader from Muenster Elementary School and a student from Sacred Heart Catholic School.
It took only three rounds for Sanchez to be declared the winner after correctly spelling the word “brochure.”
After the bee, Sanchez said, “my heart was pounding when I spelled it.”
She added that she was “happy” all her hard work has paid off and she will be attending the regional bee.
The student from Sacred Heart placed second; while Mya Stradley, a fifth-grader from Robert E. Lee Intermediate School placed third; Kolby Brasher, a third-grader from W. E. Chalmers Elementary School placed fourth.
“This is exciting for her [Jocelyn],” GISD Director of Academics Craig Hertel said. “The regional bee is televised and she will be on TV. It’s a big deal.”
Hertel said an audience of about 150 attended the brief county bee.
Jocelyn seemed to be pretty cool under pressure; she wasn’t phased by the crowd at all, he said.
This is the first year GISD participated in the Scripts Spelling Bee.
“Gainesville definitely feels that it has been a success this year,” Hertel said. “We will be continuing it next year.”
Counties included in the Dallas Region are: Anderson, Bowie, Camp, Cass, Cherokee, Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Franklin, Freestone, Grayson, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Hill, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, Limestone, Marion, Morris, Navarro, Panola, Rains, Red River, Rockwall, Rusk, Shelby, Smith, Titus, Upshur, Van Zandt and Wood. “Each county may send one champion to the Regional Spelling Bee, except Dallas County, which may send two champions — one from the public schools and one from the private schools,” according to the sponsor, the Dallas Morning News.
